Trustworthy Digital Architectures

Als digitale Architekturen bezeichnen wir die Kombination von Hardware und Betriebssystem. Herkömmliche digitale Architekturen sind oft nicht vertrauenswürdig. Daher sollten sie nicht als Basis für zukünftige Systeme im Internet der Dinge genutzt werden.

Die Forschung am BI zielt darauf ab, Module bzw. Komponenten voneinander zu isolieren. Das geschieht durch physikalische Beschränkungen auf der Hardware, wie etwa der Trennung von Schaltkreisen auf einem Chip, sowie durch Software, die z. B. den Zugriff zu den einzelnen Schaltkreisen steuert. Auf diese Weise werden die sogenannte Angriffsfläche verkleinert und im Falle von Fehlern der Schaden begrenzt. Durch gezielte und gesteuerte Kommunikation zwischen den Modulen entsteht ein komplexes Gesamtsystem. Auf diese Weise wird die Trusted Computing Base, d. h. der Teil dieses Gesamtsystems, dem man vertrauen muss, möglichst klein gehalten.

Forschende der Informatik und Elektrotechnik arbeiten eng zusammen, um bisherige Grenzen der Leistungsfähigkeit und Vertrauenswürdigkeit zu erweitern.

Die aktuellen Forschungsthemen umfassen modulare Betriebssysteme auf der Basis von sogenannten Mikrokernen sowie skalierbare Multiprozessor-Chips, die in den zwei Forschungsgruppen Composable Operating Systems und Scalable Computing Hardware bearbeitet werden.

Inhalt dieses Papiers ist die Vorstellung eines Hardware/Software Co-Designs für Rechnerknoten im Internet der Dinge. Als Grundlage dient das M3-Mikrokernsystem, welches mittels einer neuartigen Hardware-Komponente sichere und effiziente Kommunikation zwischen Funktionsbausteinen innerhalb eines System-on-Chip erlaubt. Es wird außerdem ein Ausblick darauf gegeben, wie sichere Kommunikation über Knotengrenzen hinweg ermöglicht werden kann.
