The project “Talk about Endoscopy!” explains the research of the working group NGScopes – Next Generation Endoscopy (Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health) on novel tools for laparoscopic surgery. It shows the advantages of innovative technologies in minimally invasive surgery with the aim of promoting acceptance of new technologies among the population. To this end, an interactive exhibit is being presented in collaboration with the BI at the COSMO Science Forum in Dresden.
Until now, only large hospitals with the necessary financial resources have been able to afford robot-assisted surgical systems such as the Da Vinci system and offer this treatment to their patients. However, these large and heavy surgical systems are very expensive to purchase and maintain. The innovative, electronically controllable laparoscopes with assistance functions, on the other hand, are expected to be significantly cheaper and could thus improve medical care in smaller clinics.
As part of the exhibition “Dr. Zukunft – Medical technology from Dresden science” at the COSMO Science Forum, the BI is presenting two laparoscopy training stations and the laparoscope prototype of the NGScopes working group. A film created especially for the project shows the development of the prototype and explains the differences between current and future laparoscopic technology in an easily accessible way. This compares conventional rigid devices with the research group’s novel prototype in a vivid way.

In addition to imparting information, the two training stations with rigid laparoscopy tools become a skill-building experience through the playful approach. The opportunity to explore the surgical technique interactively on the simulators themselves directly and personally involves visitors and sparks their curiosity about innovative medical technology.
To accompany the exhibition, the BI is organizing various events to give visitors deeper insights. For example, at a hands-on event for National Gastrointestinal Day, interested parties could learn how gastrointestinal and colonoscopies are performed and try out an endoscope on the simulator under the guidance of a physician from the project. In addition, engineers from the project’s working group were available to answer questions on site at several dates. After the exhibition, the developed content and demonstrators of this project will be transferred to a new format in the institute’s learning lab.
Further information on the project is available in the EKFZ video “Next Generation Endoscopy”.
