Saxony's Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow visits BI
During his visit to the Barkhausen Institut, Saxony's Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow was given an insight into the institute's research on trustworthiness in the Internet of Things.
At the institute's new premises near the Postplatz in Dresden, the Science Minister was informed about the three key points, which are not only about IT security and data protection, but also about digital decision-making processes and their verifiability:
1. digital processors and their operation systems
2. radio transmission for communication between devices and for localisation
3. digital tools for designing trustworthy electronics and software.
The Science Minister appreciated the Institute's research efforts and emphasised their importance for the security and reliability of digital systems in the age of the Internet of Things: "We already use smart devices and applications as a matter of course, which are very useful in many ways. [...] We don't need to know how these applications work technically; we just need to be able to trust that everything works as we expect it to".
BI's scientific director and CEO, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Fettweis, states that the goal of the Barkhausen Institut is to ensure that trustworthiness becomes a basic requirement for every new device connected to a network in Europe by 2030.
Therefore, an important research mission of the Barkhausen Institut is to develop standards that will form the basis for the Internet of Things and its components in the future. This can only be achieved through independent research and close cooperation with the scientific community, industry and society at large. "Saxony is the ideal location for this field of research," says Science Minister Gemkow.
