Insights from the WoC’24 in Hong Kong

Members of BI research group Composable Operating Systems participated in the Workshop on Container Technologies and Container Clouds (WoC'24), held as part of the Middleware 2024 conference in Hong Kong.

Dr.-Ing. Michael Roitzsch presented the BI paper “A Perfect Fit? – Towards Containers on Microkernels”. This research explores how microkernels could improve the way container technologies work. Containers are used in data centers to run multiple programs at the same time on the same computer. They ensure that these programs stay separate and secure, preventing one program from interfering with another or accessing data it shouldn’t. Today, most containers run on Linux, which requires many additional tools to ensure this separation. Microkernels, however, are designed to provide this separation naturally, making them a simpler and potentially safer, trustworthy option.

Robert Walther (lead author, Operating Systems Chair at TU Dresden) presented the paper “Multi-Stakeholder Policy Enforcement for Distributed Systems”. This paper was a collaboration with Dr.-Ing. Michael Roitzsch and Dr.-Ing. Carsten Weinhold (Barkhausen Institut) as well as Dr.-Ing. Peter Amthor (TU Ilmenau).

Both presentations were part of The Tenth International Workshop on Container Technologies and Container Clouds, offering an opportunity for lively discussions and knowledge exchange. The Barkhausen Institut team looks forward to continuing this exchange at the main Middleware 2024 conference in the coming days.
